So, who are you guys?
Tripp Crosby and Tyler Stanton.
What is reluctantrunners.com?
It’s a site for people who love running – just not while they’re doing it.
You mind expounding on that?
It’s the antithesis of most running magazines you see out there. Instead of catering to the beautiful and hardcore running population, we focus on the rest of us – miserable runners who, more often than not, are running against their will.
What kind of stuff do you write about?
Important issues, such as whether or not you should run in place while waiting to cross the street, the socially acceptable length for male running shorts, and why you should avoid butt capes at all costs. Also, we’ll be highlighting song suggestions for your running playlist every Friday, as well as different gimmicks that motivate us.
Why create a website about all of this?
Two reasons. First, we want to create a community – a movement, if you will – of runners like us who, in spite of our dysfunctional relationship with running, band together and do it anyway.
What’s the other reason?
Training updates.
Training updates?
Um, yeah. Against our better judgment, we’ve committed to running the Atlanta Marathon in October. We’re going to be documenting our next five months of training.
No offense, but you guys are idiots.
That wasn’t a question.
Why the heck would you commit to running a marathon? I thought you were reluctant runners.
We’re setting out to prove that if we can do it, anyone can. Speaking of, want to run it with us?
I’ll never run a marathon.
That’s exactly what we said. Seriously, at least think about it. We can all do it together – and if it will make you feel better, we’ll all promise to hate every minute of it.
We’ll see. If I do decide to, where do I sign up?
Here. If you use the code “RELUCTANT$10″ when signing up, you get $10 off your registration fee. Also, make sure to select “reluctantrunners.com” when the form asks how you found out about the race.
How often are you guys going to post?
Three times a week.
How do I get more involved?
Subscribe to the site, leave some comments, like our Facebook page, give us feedback…and, most importantly, run with us.
You know what you should do? You should film a one-minute video that explains all of this for people who don’t like to read.
We did. Scroll up.
You should create a Nike+ challenge where we can all run against each other.
We did.
Well, um…you should give away free stuff every now and then.
Already planning on it.
Touché.
Are we done here?
I believe so.

This is an amazing site.
You guys are awesome! Watching you eat those chips yesterday during the 7/4 shoot got me thinking that I must have the wrong training regimen – Thanks for straightening me out and I will incorporate that into my new training – I would appreciate additional tips along the way!
I really, really thought this site was for me. Until you said we couldn’t smile while running. This is a non-negotiable issue with me, especially when I’m running by some friends. I have to smile and be like, “See, this running thing isn’t so bad.” I think that might be how new reluctant runners are created.
As a fellow reluctant runner I love the idea of this site. I’m just gonna throw some ideas out there for you guys to run with…or laugh at…or elaborate on…or whatever.
1. Testamonials/stories from other runners about how running sucks, but they still do it. Why? Where? How long? etc. Possibly a video blog of you or someone running who hates it…cussing at the camera man.
2. A running centered pet-peeves list…much like the pet peeves list of the amazing tylerstanton.com.
3. Things that have made running not suck quite so bad.
4. Tips on how to prevent barfing 8 minutes into a run.
5. Making fun of the Trader Joe’s hippies who love running.
If this is Nolan Ryan please keep reading this message until the very end.
Either way, you better believe you’ll be getting some pet peeves, and some tips. About the barfing, you should try eating healthier before and after your runs. You can get some really great food items at your local Trader J… oh yeah. Sorry. Um.
Anyway, if this is Nolan Ryan, you should know that you are awesome. I have all but 6 of your baseball cards.
You guys rock. I am a reluctant runner on R&R in Romania and have been hesitant to continue running because of the large population of stray dogs roaming the streets. However, with your motivational enthusiasm, I may be able to find the courage to hit the streets with my Nike+ induced idevice. Keep us posted!
Reluctant in Romania
Can semi-reluctant runners participate?
:)
Absolutely. You’re what we aspire to be.
Guys I love the site but HATE Nike+. That goofy shoe insert never works properly, and you can’t replace the battery on it so you have to cough up $20 bucks for another one.
I think the Nike site is great and you can get a lot of cool information but their electronic device interface blows!
Instead, I opted for the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS watch – it captures more info than Nike+ and can be uploaded as well. There are newer models but the one I got was a deal at $117.
For newbie runners – you’ve been warned….
Love it! I’m training for the Baltimore Marathon October 15th…week one of 18 weeks of training and already wondering why ; ) although I do have to agree that nike+ is not my fav… runkeeper app is way more accurate..just sayin! Anyway love the idea of the site…..I’m sure it will help me through the training..so thanks! ~ your amish country fan
you’re the most lovable (idiots) i know :)
Okay this site is my new fave. Love it!
I don’t run or plan on running, but I do own Vibram Fivefingers, so… I’m basically 1/3 of the way to being a reluctant runner. Good luck or whatever.
P.S. I mistyped “Good luck” at first and it read “God lick” which is weird enough for me to add a post script to this comment.
I love this so very much. I had no idea I was not alone in my love/hate relationship with running. Great site!
I’m not a runner. I’m reluctant about admitting that. I want to be, mainly because I have an iPod armband that I want to wear but would look like a tool if I wore it without being a runner. I confess: I want to look cool wearing runners’ accessories. Whew. That felt good.
This is a safe place.
Okay, so…I have custom orthotics in my shoes b/c I have flat feet. And, I’ve become accustomed to New Balance with the bit of inconsistent running that I do. Soooo….can I still participate in the challenge? I log my runs in Nike + GPS, but it seems I need a sensor to log my runs onto Nike+.com. So, I prepared to buy the sensor and it seems they are suggesting that it JUST MIGHT not work properly in a non-Nike shoe AND with custom orthotics. Ugggghhh! I wanna join the band of Reluctant Runners and get motivation! Advice???
If you use Nike+ GPS on your iphone, all you should have to do is plug it into your computer (after you’ve created an account) and they should sync up. If you’re part of the challenge, the runs will show up there automatically.
Let me know if it doesn’t work.
K. I will try today after my run. :) (heh, heh…assuming I get out there today.)
I was trying to sync the runs already on there, but perhaps that doesn’t work. Will see if it works with a new run. I had an account, but not sure when I created it???? (See why I fit in this reluctant crew?) So, I don’t see any recorded runs.
Also, I have an iPod touch, not an iPhone. Not sure if that matters.
Thanks so much for the quick response. Trying to get going here!
I’ll get Tripp to weigh in on this. I know that’s how he records his runs.
It worked! I ran on my lunch break; before leaving I changed the setting on my iPod to auto sync. Dunno if that was it, but nevertheless, when I finished and then got in the wifi, it synced and I went on the website and can see my place in the challenge, etc. So, I’m all set. Thanks much!!!!!!
Just an FYI to anyone else facing a similar dilemma. Nike+ for the Ipod works off the accelerometer in it to estimate distance. If you were to use Nike+ GPS on the iPod, you’d need the foot pod, which can be worn with any shoe (just use any of the pouches available). Nike+ GPS on the phone tracks without any additional hardware needed.
Hey, I just stumbled across this site and I fit your profile perfectly. I’ve reluctantly been running since 2007 when I signed up to run the Indianapolis Mini-marathon. I’ve ran it every year since, and also a couple other halfs…this year though, I’ve upped the ante and will run the 2011 Chicago Marathon.
Welcome Adam! Good luck on the Chicago. We’re running the Atlanta Marathon in October…attempting to, anyway.
Yeah, not running a marathon anytime soon. Just now working on my 2nd 5K. I’ve got MILES to go (literally) before I would consider a marathon.
BUT I am seriously considering a sprint triathlon sometime next spring. I can handle a little bit of 3 things I don’t like more than a whole lot of ONE thing I don’t like.
Hi!
I’ve recently gotten back into running and considered running the Atlanta half-marathon this fall. Ends up, I’ll be going for it next year.
My question to you all is, “Have you all ever ran a half-marathon before or did you just up and decide to go for a marathon?”
Just curious.
Yeah, we’ve both run half marathons before. Not sure how much you’re currently running, but I think you can do it this fall…especially if you want to take walk breaks like us. Or better yet, get some friends and run the relay Oct. 30. I’m about to post about it, but basically you’ll be running a leg of the marathon instead of the whole thing.
Great site. Finally, a site made JUST FOR ME…and the tens of others that actually admit to disliking something we NEED to do for ourselves.
Ran my first and only marathon last January, a four mile. (I don’t know how many “K” that is, since I live in the United States.) Beat 14 children, someone who fell and twisted their ankle in mile 1, and a guy in a wheelchair, so I can proudly say that I didn’t come in last. It was a huge accomplishment.
Gentleman, I am home.
random joy found here! Thank you..
OK so I showed up late. Start over? I up for San Francisco Marathon July 2012. Have done the half which includes running on the deck of the Golden Gate Bridge. Want to join us west coasters next summer? Will you continue to blog to motivate me?
Yeah, we’ll continue to blog. Jury’s still out on whether or not we’ll do another one. We’re still in the hard-to-walk recovery phase.
My People…and I thought I was so smart calling myself a reluctant runner… I’m doing Paris April 15, 2012…yipes.
My People… and I thought I was being so original by calling myself a reluctant runner.. I’m doing April 15 this year. Wish me luck
ok, it’s been long enough…have you guys decided to repeat your feat for the next Atlanta Marathon in 2012? Don’t wimp out.
