Running for Love?

Guest post from Scott Moore, who reluctantly ran for love once in 2002. I love this post because of how much I can relate.

I am a reluctant runner. So reluctant, in fact, that sometimes I go for extended periods of time without running at all. Like years.  Or at least until my DVR is empty. It really is a shame that I hate running so much because I have reluctant running to thank for getting my wife and me together.

In college, I overheard her at a party say that she had just begun training for a 10K. I saw my opportunity and like that ravenous dog that always attacks me on mile 1.25 (when I am too tired to defend myself), I went in for the kill. I interrupted her conversation to announce that I too was training for a 10K. I was not.

We ran together a few times after that. Just long enough for me to work up the courage to ask her out on a date.  I did, she said yes, and we haven’t run together since.

To sum up, the very foundation of my relationship with my spouse is based on lies and fabricated truths and it is running’s fault. Plus, the last time I ran I got a blister on my pinky toe. So, I don’t care what the scientists say, obviously running is not healthy.

Have you ever had any ulterior motives for running?

Sometimes I run angry. I don’t run far, but I run at max effort. I love just running at full speed to vent anger/frustration. That, and it makes for good training as well.
